From what I've heard, Sengoku Rance has permadeath for side characters that die, but I don't think Rance himself can die. But it isn't without its charms, and if the question being asked is "does the game improve after the first game," then my answer has to be "absolutely." Monster Girl Quest isn't for everyone, no doubt about it. You may as well get upset at a roguelike for not having a deep and engaging story. If you are trying to play MGQ as a standard JRPG, of course you are going to be disappointed, because that's not what it is. The game also makes fun of healing at the inn and other well established JRPG standards. The shops serve no purpose? The shops are literally a joke. It's not really an RPG so much as it is a lightweight visual novel with RPG elements that makes fun of JRPGs. But when I say it's an incredibly weak RPG, that's a fact.Īnd this is why genres are a limiting way of classifying things. The levelling system is a joke. I didn't like the game, but that's just personal preference. The combat is just a thinly veiled excuse to look at porn. The weapon shops, for example, serve no purpose. Most of the RPG conventions stuck in the game serve no purpose other than enabling the words "RPG" to be stuck on the cover. No level gaining, no grinding, you'll be in bliss. If all you want is challenging combat, play an adventure/action game. Not every fight in the game is challenging, but I felt that enough of them were that the game was more challenging overall than most JRPGs I've played(not counting optional bosses that exist purely to give compulsive level grinders something to do). Then too in the longer fights, skill point management is important(though admittedly this does become trivial once you regain Salamander) since not having enough skill points when a spirit wears off can be an instant fight ender. Some of the fights require you to switch spirits mid-fight, guard or counter at specific times and the like. The largest difficulty with the harder monsters comes from watching for cues given in battle. I can't remember getting stuck at any point, at least. And when you start getting them back, it becomes a question of which spirit to use, which also isn't very hard- You don't need much strategy for the game overall. Granted, morning star comes pretty late (that's why I said with a few variations, but once you get the effect from salamander back you can trivialize 90% of the fights you'll see anyway) and you do lose your spirits right off the bat but the fights before you get them back are pretty easy overall. This (with very few variations) literally lead me through at least 50% of the game without using any strategy at all (and without losing) in hard mode. Besides the final fights, there's a point in the game where you can just spam that attack skill (forgot the name), use salamander, spam the skill again and morning star if the enemy happens to be alive. It's not a particularly long game, in any case, so there's little to be lost in giving it a chance(except some lost SAN from some of the sex scenes).

As a light VN with some RPG gameplay that requires you to pay attention, it's worth a go, IMO. But neither is it something I'd call "bad" either.

It's not the best VN available, and it's certainly not the best RPG out there. Contrast with your average Final Fantasy game where you can safely avoid most special abilities and just power your way through fights. While a lot of the battles are pretty straightforward, there are quite a few(especially in MGQ3) that require you to make good use of your abilities and carefully watch for enemy cues in order to avoid defeat. Because there are no random battles, you cannot trivialize the combat by grinding levels. I would counter this by saying that there is definite character development in MGQ2 and MGQ3, and that the RPG combat can actually be more challenging than most JRPGs. It's the weakest RPG I've ever encountered. Also, don't believe the 'RPG' tag they slapped on it.
